Hybrid Printing vs DTF Printing: Which Should You Choose?
Both produce stunning full-color prints. The right choice depends on your order size, fabric, and priorities.
What Is Hybrid Printing?
Hybrid printing is an advanced technology that combines screen printing and digital inkjet printing into one seamless process. Using M&R's Digital Squeegee machine, a white plastisol base coat is screen printed onto the garment, then while that base is still wet, full-color CMYK artwork is digitally printed at 300 DPI directly onto the wet plastisol.
The result is a durable, photorealistic print with unlimited colors, eco-friendly GOTS-certified water-based inks, and a soft hand feel. Hybrid printing excels at complex multi-color designs, photographic prints, and production runs where color consistency matters. Print Hybrid operates two Digital Squeegee machines with a 72-piece minimum order.

What Is DTF Printing?
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a digital transfer method where full-color designs are printed onto a special PET film at 720 DPI, coated with adhesive powder, cured, and then heat-transferred onto fabric. Unlike traditional heat transfer vinyl or sublimation, DTF works on any fabric type — cotton, polyester, nylon, leather, and even wood.
DTF printing has no minimum order quantity, making it ideal for samples, one-offs, or small runs under 72 pieces. The transfer creates a slightly raised feel on the fabric due to the adhesive layer, but modern DTF produces vibrant colors and excellent wash durability (50+ washes). Print Hybrid offers DTF for orders of any size.

When to Choose Hybrid Printing
- You need 72+ pieces for a production run
- Your design is photorealistic or has complex multi-color artwork
- Consistent prints from first to last matter (production runs)
- Eco-friendly inks matter to your brand
- You're printing on polyester or performance fabrics
- You need Pantone matching or special effects (puff, metallic)
When to Choose DTF Printing
- You need under 72 pieces (or even just 1)
- You're printing on any fabric type including nylon, leather, etc.
- You need quick samples or prototypes
- You have a rush order with a tight deadline
- Maximum DPI resolution (720 vs 300) is critical
- You want to avoid screen setup costs

Hybrid vs DTF Printing FAQ
Both last 50+ washes when properly cared for. Hybrid's water-based inks bond chemically with the plastisol base coat, creating an extremely durable print. DTF's adhesive powder creates a strong mechanical bond between the transfer and fabric. Both methods withstand repeated washing, drying, and normal wear with minimal fading or cracking.
For small orders (under 72 pieces), DTF is more cost-effective because there's no screen setup or minimum order requirement. For large orders (72+ pieces), hybrid printing becomes more economical due to production speed and lower per-unit cost. The break-even point is typically around 72 pieces, which is why that's the hybrid minimum.
Yes! Many customers use hybrid printing for the main production run and DTF for a few samples, size extremes (XXXL+), or special fabric requests. Print Hybrid offers both methods under one roof, so we can combine them in a single order. This gives you the cost-efficiency of hybrid for bulk and the flexibility of DTF for exceptions.
DTF technically achieves higher DPI (720 vs 300), but hybrid produces a softer, more integrated feel because the ink absorbs into the fabric. For most designs, both look excellent and the quality difference is minimal in practice. Hybrid excels at consistent color across large runs, while DTF offers maximum resolution for fine detail. Choose based on order size and fabric type rather than a small DPI difference.
Yes. Print Hybrid offers hybrid Digital Squeegee printing (72+ pieces), DTF digital printing (any quantity), and traditional screen printing (48+ pieces). We evaluate each project individually and recommend the best method for your design, quantity, fabric, and budget. You get honest advice because we profit from all three methods equally.
